The Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition follows the Strategic Prevention Framework put forth by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Our current strategic planning process follows two years of conducting a comprehensive community assessment to understand the risky substances most abused by youth and the factors that are contributing to these consumption behaviors in our town of Milton. We have also worked hard to build community and political will, as well as our community’s capacity to respond to the issues uncovered in our community assessment.
As testament to our effective community building efforts, over 70 coalition members that included Milton residents, employees, students, and leaders signed up to participate in a 3.5 hour Strategic Planning retreat on December 13, 2016 at Curry College. MSAPC members learned about prevention planning, the key factors in our town that contribute to our youth substance use challenges, and evidence based strategies proven to effectively tackle youth substance use. They spent the evening prioritizing strategies, focusing on community wide interventions that will best address our primary goal of preventing, reducing and delaying youth substance use.
The retreat was incredibly informative, energizing and productive. People of all backgrounds and ages were engaged in respectful and insightful conversations about how to make our community even better than it is for youth and their families.
The Coalition’s planning process continues. Currently we are analyzing the results of the coalition strategic planning retreat. The Coalition’s Core Stakeholder Group, comprised of 16 community members representing diverse sectors of the community, are empowered to refine, finalize and vote on the Strategic Plan which will serve as our community’s roadmap over the coming 3-5 years. The final plan will be posted when it is completed. Currently we are focused on a Year 1 Action Plan.
